Moving to Gibraltar

Can British move to Gibraltar? Yes - here's how in 2026

British citizens can move to Gibraltar with no visa or work permit needed – but new 2026 residency rules mean you'll need a job paying around £37,500 and be under 55.

Yes, British citizens can move to Gibraltar - but you need to know the new 2026 rules

British citizens can move to Gibraltar with no visa, no work permit and no immigration cap, as a British Overseas Territory, Gibraltar grants British nationals the unqualified right to live and work there. Brexit did not change this.

However, on 6 October 2025, the government of Gibraltar suspended all new residency applications from UK and EEA nationals, and on 14 July 2026, new Residency Regulations came into force that set tighter rules for anyone moving to Gibraltar for the first time now.

What changed in July 2026?

The government of Gibraltar announced revised rules for people applying for residency in Gibraltar to ensure that long-term residence rights are granted to applicants that make a genuine economic contribution and have a durable connection to Gibraltar. The reforms are designed to ensure residency is linked to genuine economic contribution ahead of the new UK-EU Treaty on Gibraltar.

The key changes: the qualifying period for Permanent Residency status is increased from five years to 10 years, and the qualifying period for Gibraltarian status via long residence is increased from 10 years to 20 years and is also made subject to ministerial discretion.

The two rules that matter most: salary and age

Gibraltar's Residency Regulations 2026 came into force on 14 July, with a £37,500 salary floor, an age 55 cap, £250 fees, and a £14,420 deposit.

To live in Gibraltar as an Ordinary Resident (the route for most working people), you generally need:

  • Gross annual earnings of £37,500, which is waivable for under-30s
  • To be 55 or under, with an exception possible at the Chief Minister's discretion above 55
  • A job offer or employment contract from a Gibraltar employer
  • A 12-month lease for accommodation in Gibraltar

If you're under 30, you may be able to get a waiver on the salary requirement. The application fee for Residence is £250.

Who is this for?

Since June 2026 Gibraltar has tied residency to a real local job. This means you need to either:

  1. Secure employment first in Gibraltar (most common route for working-age Britons)
  2. Be self-employed or run a local business
  3. Qualify for another category – such as Category 2 for high-net-worth individuals or HEPSS for high-earning professionals

June 2026 reforms introduced the closure of new residence applications based on living aboard vessels, the removal of the ability to downgrade from Category 2 status to self-sufficiency, and the closure of the previous route for UK nationals in receipt of a UK State Pension to obtain residence by transferring NHS rights to the Gibraltar Health Authority. This has closed some older pathways that may have applied to you a year ago.

You keep your UK citizenship

Moving to Gibraltar does not affect UK citizenship. British nationals living in Gibraltar remain UK citizens and continue to hold British passports while benefiting from Gibraltar residency and its favourable tax and lifestyle environment.

The registration process

While no immigration permission is required, British citizens who move to Gibraltar do need to register formally if they intend to live and work there long-term. This is done through the Civil Status and Registration Office (CSRO), based at Joshua Hassan House, 2-8 Secretary's Lane. Registration at the Civil Status and Registration Office typically completes within one to two weeks once you have a Gibraltar address.

The hard part: finding accommodation

Finding accommodation is the hardest part. The property market is tight and rental supply is limited. Most employers and immigration officials expect you to have a 12-month lease in place before your residency application is approved. Start your search early.

What about staying longer than a few weeks?

A British citizen visiting Gibraltar may stay for 90 days in any 180-day period. Time spent in Gibraltar and time spent in the Schengen Area now count together towards that limit. Anyone who wants to stay beyond the limit must apply for residence in Gibraltar under the residence rules that came into force on 14 July 2026.
